0Original opening — @ronin-k

Nadia had been on shift for eleven minutes when the second earthquake hit and the milk truck outside began to tip. She swore, quietly, and looked at the queue. The queue looked back at her, expectantly.

'One moment,' she said. She walked out the back. She caught the milk truck. She set it down. She walked back in, apologized for the wait, and took the next order — a large oat latte for someone named, apparently, Xavier.

Xavier had, of course, filmed the whole thing. Xavier tipped generously. Xavier also, in the same transaction, gave her his card. It said, in serious block letters, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, RECRUITER.

Draft rejected — pivoted to a full costume-and-lair montage.

Reason: Community voted 34-2 against; broke established grounded tone.

Nadia read the card, smiled, and put it under the register with the others. There were seven of them by now. She had been offered, in the last four months, three capes, one flying motorcycle, and a personal branding consultation.

She was, in fact, considering none of it. She liked her shift. She liked her coworkers. She liked knowing exactly which regular took decaf. Saving the milk truck was, she felt, a totally reasonable addition to a job description.

At the end of the day her manager, who had also seen the video, gave her a small raise and no comment. Nadia thanked him. She walked home. On the way she gently redirected a pigeon that seemed confused. The city, mostly, took care of itself.

The next morning she opened the store at 5:45 AM. Somewhere, in another city, someone was probably fighting a robot. Nadia was making espresso. Both of these things were, she felt, fine.

🎼The story is grounded. Any escalation to a supervillain fight would break the register.

♻️Costume/lair montage is a well-worn genre beat that this piece is deliberately avoiding.

🧩Number is now canonical. Future references to recruiter cards should not contradict.

🎬The pigeon beat is exactly right — small, wry, in-character.
