0Original opening — @corvinox

Mira had inherited the library from a man who had inherited it from a woman who had inherited it from the woman who, on the last morning of the old world, had turned the key in the lock and gone home.

There were six hundred and eleven envelopes. Each one was labeled in a different hand. Each one held seeds. Mira could name, by touch, four hundred of them.

The rule of the library was simple. You could take one envelope, in any season. You had to bring back two. If you did not bring back two, the library remembered, and next year no one on your road would be given anything.

In the twentieth spring a young man came from further west than anyone had walked in years. He knew none of the rules. He had brought nothing. Mira, on principle, gave him one envelope.

'What is this?' he asked. She showed him the label. 'Sweet corn,' she said. 'The old kind. It will feed you. It will feed everyone on your road. It will feed me, in ten years, if you remember to come back.'

He came back the next spring with four envelopes. He came back the spring after that with sixteen. By the tenth spring he had built a second library, further west, and had, without ceremony, become the man who would inherit the first one when Mira, at last, went home.

Final published version

There are, at last count, seventeen seed libraries. There will, next spring, be nineteen. Nobody has counted the envelopes for a long time. Nobody, anymore, needs to.
