0Original opening — @meadowlark

Wallace was a very small badger with a very serious problem. It was hot. Badgers are not good at hot. Also, he had run out of ideas.

He climbed the tallest hill he knew — which was actually a medium-sized hill, but Wallace was small — and asked, politely, if he might borrow one of the clouds.

The sky thought about this. The sky did not usually lend things. But Wallace had said 'please,' and Wallace was very small, and the sky had a lot of clouds.

So the sky sent down a medium-sized cloud on a piece of thin blue string. Wallace tied it to his hat. The cloud made a very cool shadow on top of his head, which was exactly the size of a badger.

He wore it all afternoon. At sunset, exactly when he had promised, he untied the string. The cloud went home. The sky, quietly, was pleased. Wallace was too. He waved.

Final published version

The next morning Wallace found a small blue string on his doorstep. He kept it in a jar, in case the sky needed it back someday.

AI Assistance

Every suggestion the AI offered during writing. AI never edits automatically — writers decide.

AI · tonethroughoutaccepted

🎼Sentence rhythms should stay short and repeatable. Read aloud test: every turn should sound like a bedtime page.

AI · consistencyafter #2accepted

🧩The sky is being characterized as generous and slightly formal. Keep that voice — it is the story's second character.
